I have a pregnancy question for you. My cousin is pregnant, and she just told me she has placenta previa. Do you know anything about it?

Thanks!
Melissa

Placenta Previa is when the placenta covers the cervix. As the uterus grows to accomodate the baby the placenta will usually move up as well. Occasionally the placenta doesn't move up and still covers the cervix in late pregnancy. If that occurs then a c-section is necessary because when the cervix starts to dilate it begins to detach from the placenta and that is dangerous for the baby as it cuts off the baby's oxygen supply. Usually the protocol for care is to have a few extra sonograms to check the movement of the placenta and no intercourse to avoid irritating the cervix.

If your cousin was just diagnosed with it and she is still early in her pregnancy then she has a pretty good chance it will move as the baby grows.

Hope that helps!
