Look At My Bread!

So, I've been making some changes, slowly but surely in our house.  I have a hate for High Fructose Corn Syrup and want to keep it as far away from our house as possible.  I have a GREAT breadmaker that I got for free from some friends (thank you MacDonalds!) and have decided to stop buying bread from the grocery store.  It is healthier and cheaper to make from home.  It is almost impossible to find grocery bread that doesn't have HFCS in it.  I do the dough in the bread machine then take it out to do the second rising and put it in the oven.  Homemade deliciousness!  I like the bread shape when I bake it in the oven myself.  The bread maching makes the bread more square-shaped and doesn't last as long.

I addes some sprouted wheat berries to my bread this time too.  I didn't add to many because I wasn't sure whether or not it would disrupt the science of breadmaking but it didn't seem to mess it up.
Oh, it tastes so good.  And smells so good.  Mmmmmmmmm.....

I've also been making our own yogurt which is soooo much cheaper as well, and doesn't have any weird additives in it.  We eat a LOT of yogurt at our house.  When you are living on a budget a few dollars can go a long way.

I'll probably be posting some more food changes in the near future but I wanted to share pictures of my pretty bread loaf.

How do you make your yogurt? That's on my food to-do list. I have a friend that makes yogurt in a crockpot. I want to try her recipe. Bread is also on my to-do list. I want to try this recipe http://www.passionatehomemaking.com/2008/01/kitchen-tip-tuesday-homemade-bread.html

You know, when my mother-in-law lived in town here she used to buy her own grain and mill it to make her own bread. She would make a loaf for something like 15 cents. I know everytime she's in Pittsburgh she gets a sack of the grain for her homemade bread.

I have been getting organic whole wheat flour from frankferd farms which mills the grains there and it is STILL cheaper than buying at the store. And so fun! :)

Where does your MIL go to get the grain?

Have you seen the pro-HFCS commercial? I was appalled. A woman stands there, pouring some red-fake-fruit drink into a cup while the other mom says, "You know, that has HFCS in it."
"I know. What's the problem?"
Other mom stammers, like there's nothing really bad to say about it.
First mom, "It's made from corn, it's no worse than sugar, and it's fine to have in moderation."
Other mom nods in agreement.
Seriously?!!?! I know I buy some products with HFCS. And I know it won't kill you to drink a cup of fruit punch, but really?!? A commercial saying, "Go out there and give your kids some HFCS! There's no reason not to!"

I could relive my entire passionate response to the commercial I had with Curtis, but I'll spare you.
;-)

Monica, I'm still waiting for her response to the HFCS ad on this website or The Mom Crowd. When I first saw the commercial several months ago in the US, my first thought was, "What would Amelia say about this?" (and I'm serious, that really did cross my mind)
